We are about fifteen years into the “I’m going to make money online and make millions” mindset. Everyday, millions of websites and blogs are setup and entrepreneur minded individuals embark on their journey to becoming self made “internet millionaires”. Let’s face it, a very small percentage of these sites actually become a successful revenue driver for their owners, but those that do, typically follow a five step process.
In today’s post, I want to run through the five things you need to do really well in order to have a successful publisher/affiliate website. If you fail to execute on one of these steps, your chances to be successful will be greatly reduced, so don’t skimp or the time, energy, and money invested will be wasted.
The first component of having a wildly successful affiliate site is to ensure you have an attractive website design in place. Every day, internet users become more and more savvy and can quickly spot a crappy website based on its design. Don’t take this as you need to have every bell and whistle, you don’t. What you need is a visually appealing site that resonates with your target audience. If you have that you are 1/5 of the way there.
The second component of having a wildly successful website is to ensure your content is great. Not good, but great! Just as with our first component, your visitors can quickly spot a crappy site based on the quality of its content. Before publishing your site, you should create a content map that addresses all of the interests, questions, and concerns of your target audience. You will then need to begin creating robust content that addresses each of those topics you generated in your map.
What you are really aiming for is ensuring your site is a comprehensive library of content for your audience. This not only helps establish yourself as a thought leader in the space and to your visitors, but also helps your site become an authority in the eyes of the search engines. When you become an authority the search engines reward you with more visibility, thus increasing the amount of traffic coming to your website.
Lastly, great content brings your visitors back to your affiliate marketing site time and time again. They are hungry for the next piece of content you will publish and are more likely to purchase what you are selling or sign up for your mailing list to be re-marketed to. This is where the true money lies.
After reading about this component you might be thinking, DANG! That’s a lot of work, I’m not sure it’s worth it. My answer is yes, it is a lot of work. It is a long, time intensive process. However, in the end, you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts and have a sustainable online business, which is what you set out to do, isn’t it? The third component to having a wildly successful website is to ensure that you have powerful opt-in forms strategically placed on your website. I mean, there’s no point in building a great looking site accompanied by great content if you aren’t going to collect the names and email addresses of your visitors. Creating great opt-in forms is actually quite simple and can be done by leveraging a platform like Mail Chimp.
The fourth component and second half to the third component is to put together compelling email campaigns to re-market to those who opted in to receive your content and offers. With this component, it is crucial to understand the needs of your subscribers and speak directly to those needs. Anyone can send emails updating a list on recent content additions or promotions that they might be interested in, but the true power and revenue comes from when you are fulfilling a need of your subscribers. If you need some ideas on re-marketing, you can check out this fantastic post by Unbounce.
The fifth, and last component to having a wildly successful advertising website is to put in place a monetization strategy that matches your visitors/readers/subscribers needs. Nothing is more annoying than banner ads, adsense, or other monetization strategies that pitch offers not remotely related to your content and the needs of those consuming it.
One fantastic way to monetize your website that not only meets the needs of your visitors/readers/subscribers but also has proven to increase engagement and content consumption is our app recommendation program. The reason it works so great is because you can serve your readers apps to download based on their content consumption habits. Our robust algorithm knows what they need and when they need it and you profit from it! You can learn more about our app recommendation program here.
So there you go, the five components of creating a wildly successful publisher/affiliate website. Again, be careful to carry out each of these components as removing one will greatly reduce the effectiveness of your efforts. If you have any questions or comments, please add them below.
